CIC 525 | Birthday Alpaca | Aqua, Red, Brown

We’re still playing with colours for the latest Cupcake Inspiration Challenge. The challenge is well under way but you still have until Friday to play along, and we’d love to see your projects focusing on the colours aqua, red and brown. You can bring in other colours too, but the focus should be the challenge colours.

I started with a white card base and positioned Altenew’s On The Plus Side stencil over it, holding it in place with some washi tape. I then ink blended through it with Ocean Waves ink. I blended such that the colour was strongest in the bottom left, fading out as it moved across the card base.

Next, with the stencil still in place, I put the card base in my MISTI and positioned Altenew’s Wood Pallet Background over it. My plan was to stamp through the stencil with the same blue ink to add texture and interest into my stenciling. Different stencils have different thickness, and this one I found to be a bit thick. My first attempt at stamping through it didn’t work at all, as the stamp didn’t manage to reach the card through the stencil. I tried again, applying more pressure, and had more success.

Next I started working on my focal image. I had been planning a one layer card, but realised at this point that I hadn’t remembered to stamp and mask my alpaca. I tried stamping and colouring directly over the stenciling, thinking that my dark colours might cover the stenciling enough, but it didn’t work as well as I wanted, so I changed plans.

I stamped the cute alpaca from Altenew’s Alpaca stamp set onto a snippet of X-Press It Blending Card with MFT Black Hybrid ink and coloured with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I tried to give the impression of thick curls, as alpacas have, with my colouring. Keeping the colours of the challenge in mind I coloured the alpaca brown, with a red scarf. I also bought in just a touch of grey for his feet (hooves? – nope, just looked it up, apparently alpacas and other camelids have feet with padded toes and toenails, not hooves. Now you know.)

Alpaca – EB7, EB4, EB1, GB2

Scarf – TN7, RB2, DR3, MG3

Feet – IG10, IG6

Once all the colouring was done I carefully fussy cut the image with my Tim Holtz Mini Snips. I then used a black, brush-tip, water-based marker to edge the image, hiding the white core of the paper. I could then adhere the alpaca into place.

The final addition to the card was the happy birthday sentiment from Altenew’s Super Script. I think this may well be my most used sentiment stamp. I like the simple font, and the size of it, and it works well for so many birthday projects! I stamped it with Versafine Onyx Black ink, positioning it such that it nestles in beside the alpaca, almost as if the alpaca is looking at it.

I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge. You can find further inspiration from the rest of the Design Team on the challenge site, both in the launch post (here’s my card for the launch) and the reminder post, or directly at their blogs via the links below.
