HLS CAS Challenge | Summer Drink | Bottoms Up

It’s starting to feel summery here in Finland, and I thought I’d channel that energy into my card for this month’s Happy Little Stampers CAS challenge. Our theme for the month is Bottoms Up, which (despite not indulging myself) brings alcohol to mind. You can of course interpret the prompt however you like along as the theme is clear. Perhaps some little ducklings with their tails in the air? Whatever you decide, make sure to keep it CAS!

I started my card with my focal image which is from Love From Lizi’s Summer Fruits stamp set. I stamped it with MFT Black Hybrid ink onto a snippet of white card, then cut it out with the coordinating die. My first attempt ended up cut badly, so I restamped and cut again, using the negative of the first attempt to help me position the die. I also cut once more without stamping, leaving me with three cut out shapes in total.

With the image stamped and cut out I worked on colouring it, using my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I started with the drink itself which I wanted to make look like a tropical cocktail. I started with red at the bottom, then orange into yellow and finally a yellow-green. I added some light blue to the base of the glass, and also used blues for the umbrella. I went with magenta for the flower, and a touch of green along the leaf.

I did have some trouble with the colouring as my red bled quite badly. I used my blender pen to blend it out as much as I could, then used a white gel pen to cover up the last of it. I also used white gel pen to add some shine on the glass and umbrella, as well as dot detail on the flower.

A snippet of vellum became the background for both my focal image and sentiment. I cut it down with one of the Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Oval dies, and heat embossed a sentiment from the same stamp set using Simon Says Stamp’s Steel Navy embossing powder.

I used my Nuvo Smooth Precision Glue Pen to adhere the three layers of the cocktail image together. I considered using one or two of the layers to add dimension behind the vellum but decided against it as it would only work on the one side, leaving the panel uneven. I used the glue pen again to add glue behind the heat embossed letters before attaching it to my yellow card base. I then attached the image, adding more glue hidden behind it to further hold the panel I place.

The final touch for my design was a trio of Nuvo Drops in Blue Babe. I arranged them in a visual triangle to frame my design.

I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge. You can find further inspiration from the rest of the Design Team on the challenge site or directly at their blogs via the links below.

  4. To be honest I had to look for the translation of “bottoms up” which is quite different than the literal translation 😄. Now I know what it means ! I love your pretty CAS take on this theme and the Vellum die cut to ground the image and sentiment is a fabulous idea. As bright as the summer days we have lately. Thanks so much for sharing and for playing along at Uniko.
