Watercooler Wednesday Challenge #155 – Anything Goes

It’s the fifth Friday of the month which means we have a special anything goes challenge over at the Watercooler Wednesday challenge today. The card I’m sharing for this challenge is one I made a little while ago as part of a Christmas present. It’s an any occasion card, with the sentiment saying “all the best”.

I started by doing my heat embossing. I used my anti-static powder tool across the brown panel, then stamped randomly over it with leaf stamps from Simon Says Stamp’s Kind Flowers stamp set. I added gold embossing powder from Wow and heat set it.

Next I made my sentiment panel. I picked a sentiment and stamped it onto a snippet of white vellum using MFT Black Licorice Hybrid Ink. As the vellum is quite slick it’s important to be careful not to smudge the ink as it will take quite a while to dry. One thing I do to avoid smudging is fold a piece of absorbent tissue (like kitchen towel) and carefully press it straight down onto the inky sentiment. The tissue will pick up some of the excess ink, helping it to dry quicker. It is important not to shift the tissue from side to side at all whilst doing this as that could cause smudging.

I then used my metal ruler and craft knife to trim the vellum piece down and cut the end at an angle. I positioned the vellum on the panel, folding the end around and adhering it behind the panel. I also used some very small dots of glue pen behind the thickest areas of letters on my sentiment, to help adhere it at the front too. Finally I added double-sided tape to the back of the panel and adhered it to my card base.

This card was actually inspired by one I made with the Simon Says Stamp November card kit. It is very similar, but I do really like the look of the gold embossed leaves against the brown background, so I couldn’t resist doing it again! I think that making patterned backgrounds with little stamps is really fun.

  1. Hi Charlotte, heat embossing is so rewarding, isn’t it? The finished raised gold images makes your card seem so professional albeit clean and simple. Love your decision to use a brown background. I think the gold shows up so much better against that than white. Love the way the vellum allows that stamping to show through.

    1. Thank you Heidi. Yes, I really enjoy heat embossing. Took me a while to get the hang of it though – I didn’t like it at all when I first tried the technique. You’re right that the gold wouldn’t have been as striking on white. I definitely think it looks best on darker backgrounds.
