The Little Paper Tree | Emboss Resist vs Blend and Emboss | Video

The emboss resist technique is a fun one that I know a lot of people enjoy. But I got to thinking about why we choose to do that rather than blending first and then embossing over it. So for this month’s DT project for The Little Paper Tree I decided to make two simple cards featuring embossing and ink blending – one with the emboss resist technique, and the other with blending and then embossing.

I decided to use Altenew’s Wood Pallet Background stamp for my experiment. I first stamped and clear heat embossed it onto a white 4 1/4″ by 5 1/2″ card base. I then used Altenew’s Paper Bag ink to blend all over the front of the card base. Once I’d finished blending I buffed the excess ink away from the embossed lines using a paper towel.

For my second example I ink blended first. I again used the Paper Bag ink and blended directly onto my white card base. Then I let my card base dry. I sped the process a bit with the help of my heat gun. Before embossing I tested that the ink was dry by making sure the embossing powder wouldn’t stick to it. I then treated with my anti-static powder tool, stamped the wood background with embossing ink, and heat embossed with white embossing powder.

I completed each card by stamping the Hello from Altenew’s Super Script stamp set. I then added a few Nuvo Drops in Simply White.

The two finished cards, whilst similar, definitely do have a different look to them. In hindsight it would have been a fairer comparison of used the white embossing powder on both. I think for this design I prefer the emboss resist look. What do you think? I feel it looks more as if the stamped lines are in the design whilst the blended then embossed version does look as though the embossing is sitting on top, which it is. That said I think other stamps and designs could look better done with the second technique.

Love,

Lady Joyful
