Flying Hedgehogs – IWD Feb 5 – Feb 19

It’s time for the first Incy Wincy Designs Challenge of the month! We have two sponsors for this challenge. Sticker You is providing a $30 gift certificate to one winner, and the value can also be used towards the cost of postage. Createful Hearts are offering the same images that the Design Team used for this challenge, which are Ahna, Story Time, and of course the adorable Up, Up and Away image that I’ve used on this card. Our theme this time around is Clean and Simple – and you know I love CAS cards!

I started by printing the Up, Up and Away image onto some alcohol marker friendly paper, then got to work on colouring. As usual I used both  Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers and Yosoo alcohol markers to do my colouring. I started with the hedgehogs themselves, using some very light tan shades to colour their skin. I then switched to darker browns for their spikes. I put a layer of my lightest brown across the spike area, then flicked in darker colours to add shading and texture.

I decided to use red for the heart balloons. I did consider pink, but settled on red as I felt that I wanted them to be bolder than the pink would have allowed. The final bit of colouring to do was the larger hedgehog’s eye. I initially used a light brown but wasn’t happy with how that looked. I went over it with green, which does look better than the brown did but in hindsight I think blue would have been a better choice.

Having completed my colouring I got to work with assembling the card. I used a combination of my paper trimmer and fussy cutting to trim away the right hand side of my panel. I also trimmed a little off the left hand side using my paper trimmer, to ensure a good amount of reveal.

I created a card base from some blue card, then added double-sided tape to the front right hand side and adhered a strip of cloud patterned paper along it. Having decided against adding a sentiment to my panel I added foam tape across the back of it and then adhered it onto my card base, leaving the patterned paper showing on the right where I had trimmed the panel to be smaller than the card base.

As a final touch I added a layer of shimmer to each of the balloons using some clear Wink of Stella. I then coated them with Glossy Accents to really give the look of balloons.

I’m really happy with this card, though I do kind of wish I’d had a suitable sentiment for it. It does work well enough without any though. I’ve been wanting to do this kind of off-the-edge look for a while now so I’m pleased I finally managed to try it out! I do like how it looks and I think it’s a fun way to add movement to the card.

Love,

Lady Joyful
