I enjoy watercolouring, but I’m not that confident at it. I think my biggest issue is that I am not patient enough to work in layers. I managed to find my patience for this card, and really enjoyed the process of creating the watercolour background panel.
I began by making my focal panel. I cut a piece of watercolour paper to larger than I expected to use, so that I could choose the best area. I then taped it down to a board (actually the back of the pad the paper comes in) and wet it well with plain water. Working in layers I created an ombre effect with several shades of blue Gansai Tambi watercolour paints. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process between each layer. Once it was completely dry I cut out a portion of the background using a die from Mama Elephant’s Framed Tags Lafayette.
Next I use some paper tape to adhere the cut watercoloured panel to the Stars and Sparkles Large Stencil from Skull and Cross Buns. I mixed some Clear DecoArt Media Modeling Paste with a little Catherine Pooler Limoncello ink and some Vintage Platinum Distress Glitter Dust and used a palette knife to apply it through the stencil. I probably could have used more of the Limoncello ink as it didn’t show up very yellow against the blue background once it was dry. (By the way, check out this video for tips on storing your embossing pastes.)
Whilst the focal panel was drying I worked on the other elements of my card. I stamped one of the unicorns from the I Believe In Unicorns stamp set onto a snippet of white card using MFT Black Licorice Hybrid ink, which is alcohol marker friendly. I coloured the image with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers, choosing greys to shade the body white. For the mane and tail I went with yellow shades to tie in with the other colours on the card. I used the same reasoning for choosing blues for the horn and spots. I also bought in a little pink for the inner ear and nose. I then fussy cut the unicorn out and used a black brush tip watercolour marker to go around the edges of it.
For my sentiment strip I used a snippet of black card and heat embossed one of the sentiments from the I Believe In Unicorns stamp set with Love From Lizi Golden Crown embossing powder.
With all my elements ready and the focal panel fully dried I just had to assemble my card. I used double-sided tape to attach the sentiment strip to the starry panel, then added the unicorn with Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue. Finally I used foam tape to pop everything up on the card front.
I really had a lot of fun making this card and I’m so pleased with the end result. The watercolour panel looks better than I’d hoped, and the sparkly stars look great against it. Maybe they could have used more yellow, but then again being a clear paste it might not have helped much. And actually I think that the transparency they have helps to add to the ethereal and magical feel of the card.
Love,
Lady Joyful
