It’s new challenge time at The Male Room and for this one we’re anything goes, with the optional twist of origami. I think the optional twist is very fun and could be a great challenge, but if you’d rather not then we’re happy to see whatever masculine project you might make! I decided to have a go at the origami myself, and created a monochromatic birthday card.
I started by creating three origami bowties. I did a little research and found some instructions which I carefully followed, using some snippets of white paper. I actually had four attempts. On the trial run I followed the instructions all the way to page 12 of the instructions (the curved fold after that just didn’t want to work for me!) where the pointed ends of the bowtie get folded in. I decided however that I quite liked the look that the pointy ends gave the bowtie, so when I made the three for using on the card I decided to stop before the stage of folding them in. So my bowties are not entirely correct, but I think they look fun as they are.
Next I took a black card base and white heat embossed a Happy Birthday sentiment onto it. The one I chose is from a stamp set by Happy Little Stampers. Unfortunately Happy Little Stampers closed down so it is not possible to buy the stamps anymore, but any sentiment could be used. I just chose this particular one because I felt it went well with the design I was making.
The last thing to do was attach the bowties to the card. This was a little tricky because the back of the knot area, which was the portion I adhered down, kept trying to unfold slightly so it didn’t want to stay in place. I ended up using quite a bit of Glossy Accents and pressing the knots firmly into place to get them to hold. Some of the glue ended up seeping out so I had to use both my craft knife and sand eraser to clean it up.
I’ll be honest, I struggled a little with the origami. It’s not something I’ve really done much before, and it didn’t turn out quite as neatly as I would have liked. But overall I like the design of the card, and I’m glad I gave the origami a try as I always think it’s fun to challenge myself. If I were to do origami for a card again though I think I’d probably choose something a bit simpler.
