TMR 116 | Surfer Penguin | Surf’s Up | Video

We celebrated Christmas in July in our last challenge at The Male Room, but now we’re back to summery thoughts with our new theme – Surf’s Up. It took me a while to decide what to do for this card, and I considered a few different ideas before I chose this one. I hope you’ll be inspired by what I made!

I started by creating my background. I used Tumbled Glass Distress Oxide to ink blend directly on my card base, coming in from the bottom right corner and fading to white as I moved across the card. I then switched to Mermaid Lagoon to intensify the colour from the corner, as well as a touch of Stormy Sky to add a little darkness.

After finishing the ink blending I placed the Leafy Texture Stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop over the card base, using repositionable tape to hold it in place. I then spread DecoArt Clear Media Modeling Paste across the stencil to add interest to the blended background. When I was done I immediately removed the stencil, and washed it as well as my palette knife and craft mat.

Whilst the card base dried I worked on the image for my card. I chose the Surfer Penguin Digi from Create A Smile (which is one of their freebie digis) and printed it onto Neenah Solar White 80lb card stock. I coloured the image with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers and fussy cut it out.

Placing the dried card base in my MISTI I stamped a sentiment from Simon Says Stamp’s Sea You Soon with Versafine Onyx Black ink. I then popped up my image on foam tape and finished off the card with some Sea Breeze Nuvo Drops.

Considering I had no idea what to do for this theme I’m really pleased with the end result. If I were to redo the card I would possibly stamp the sentiment prior to adding the paste, as the texture does of course make it more difficult to stamp on though. I’d have to be sure that the ink I used for the sentiment would not smudge when the paste is applied over it, but as it is clear it wouldn’t matter to have the sentiment underneath. If you’d like to link up to our challenge, or want to see the inspiration from the rest of the Design Team, be sure to head over to the challenge page. You can also find the team’s projects via their links below, and I will be sharing them on our Facebook page over the course of the challenge period too. We look forward to seeing what you make!
