It’s the second Wednesday of the month which means time for a new Christmas At Sweet Stampin’ challenge. Last month our optional twist was Christmas in the sun. This month we’re going a different direction and looking for snow people to be included in your projects. I thought I’d change things up a bit and try to create my snowfolk card on black card stock, using pearlised watercolours for colouring them.
I started by stamping and white heat embossing the snow couple from Art Impressions’ Merriest Christmas Set, along with a sentiment, onto a black card base. I then used my Gansai Tambi Pearl Colours to add colour to the image. I started with the white gold to paint in all the snow including the bodies of the couple. I then used the red, green and blue for colouring the accessory elements of the design. I mixed the yellow and red to make orange for their noses, and also mixed the pink and green to create a brown shade for the stick arms and the broom.
I left the card to dry and found that the colours faded back more than I would like, leaving the image shimmery but lacking the colour definition. After digging through my supplies I found some metallic colouring pencils and I used those to add a little more detail to the areas that had faded back, giving more intensity to the watercolour. As a final touch I added splatters of the white gold across the card to give the look of snow.
My idea with this card was that the scene is a night-time scene, hence the dark background. I’ve enjoyed using metallic watercolours on dark card in the past, and thought it would be fun to try with pearls. I’m not sure I entirely like how it came out. I think the look works better with florals than it does with snowmen! Still it was fun to experiment with the technique and it definitely gives a different look. If you’d like to join in with our challenge, either making a snow people card or just anything Christmas goes, you can link up with us over on the challenge page.
