CIC 495 | Rainbow Rose | Friendship

Have you joined in our friendship challenge at Cupcake Inspirations yet? It started last week, and you can see the first card I made for it here. For the reminder post I decided to create a one layer CAS design with a flower. I wanted it to be bright and colourful, and what better than a rainbow! Especially as we’re in Pride month.

I began by stamping the largest flower from Uniko’s Pure Floral: Rose stamp set directly onto my card base with MFT Black Licorice Hybrid Ink, which is alcohol-marker friendly. I also stamped the image onto some scrap paper, which I fussy cut out and coated on the back with Tombow Mono Liquid Multi Glue to create a mask, which I set aside.

For my colouring I used my Spectrum Noir Illustrator Markers. I have a picture to the left of the colours I used, clustered by each of the combinations. I chose three colours per petal, and started by laying in an all-over coating of the lightest colour, then adding my shadows with the darkest, and finally blending out with my main colour. I probably could have skipped the lightest colour as it got fully covered each time. I had been thinking it would help with the blend by getting the card stock damp, but I did have some bleeding which may have been avoided by skipping that step. I also used some ice grey to add a drop shadow around the flower.

A couple of things to note with the colours I used. I am quite limited with colours for both red and purple. For the red this meant I actually used a green as my shadow colour. Green is complementary to red, meaning it is opposite on the colour wheel. Mixing opposite colours makes brown, but with careful choice of shades they can be used to darken eachother, as I did here. With the purple I did stick with purples, but as the colour difference between the LV3 and PL4 is quite intense I used the tip-to-tip method to help improve the blend between the shades.

Once I was completely happy with my colouring I covered the flower with the mask I had created earlier. I also cut another snippet of scrap paper with a heart die, and laid the negative portion over my flower. I used a Scrapbook.com stencil brush to blend Altenew’s Mountain Mist into the heart aperture. I wanted a very light colour that wouldn’t detract from the flower. I’d originally considered grey, but thought that might be too dull.

After removing my mask I placed the card base into my MISTI and positioned the elements of the sentiment. The sentiment I used consists of three separate stamps. As I was already using Altenew ink for the ink blended background I decided to use Altenew inks for the sentiment, too. I stamped the scripty word “heart” with Altenew Volcano Lake, then stamped the rest of the sentiment with Altenew Jet Black.

Colouring this flower was really fun. I don’t think I’ve ever tried colouring a rainbow flower before. Certainly not that I can remember doing. It’s not perfect – as I already said I had some issues with ink bleeding. I also confused myself in a few places and I think there are a few places that what I coloured as two separate petals is actually one large petal. But still, florals are fairly forgiving, and having fun is the important thing. One other issue I have with this card is that the ink blended heart is so light it doesn’t show up well in the photos… It is there though!

I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our friendship-themed challenge. You can find more inspiration from the team over on the challenge site, both in the launch post and the reminder post, or directly at their blogs via the links below.
