Collected Crafty Collabs Hop | Sending A Summer Hello | Summer and Embossing Folders

It’s hop time again! The Collected Crafty Collabs hop is all about making use of supplies that we’ve squirreled away and perhaps don’t give as much love as we should. We’ll have two themes each month, and for August those are Summer/Vacation and embossing folders. I decided to use both on my project. I have a reasonable number of embossing folders, though not loads and I don’t use them all that much. So the first thing I did was look through my folders and try to find one I wanted to use. I then remembered that, whilst looking for something else recently, I’d spotted an embossing folder in an old kit I’d never used. I decided to dig that out.

Once I found it I was inspired by the name (kaleidoscope – although the shop listing says it’s called fractal!) to create a colourful panel, and I decided it would be fun to do it as a slimline and see whether it would work to use the regular size folder for a slimline card.

Initially I thought I would ink blend a background in rainbow colours. I knew that might be tough on my painful wrist so I thought is make it easier by putting the initial layer of colour directly on the card base by ink swiping, or ‘swinking’! I used Festive Berries, Wild Honey, Squeezed Lemonade, Lucky Clover, and Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxides. Once I’d finished swiping I decided I liked how it looked without adding any further blending. I dried it off with my WOW! Dual Speed heat gun before continuing.

Next I bought in the embossing folder. I initially wanted to put the panel in sideways to the folder as I thought that would be easiest for lining up to do the second portion of the panel, because of course it was too long to emboss it all in one go. The folder was slightly too big to go through my Big Shot that way around though, so I changed it to be length-wise rather than width-wise. I ran it through once, then removed the inked panel and turned it around to put the other end of the panel, that had not been embossed yet, into the embossing folder. The panel was long enough that I could overlap the middle area, which allowed me to slide one of the already embossed circles into place until it ‘clicked’ into position, so that I could be sure the next lot of embossing lined up completely.

With that complete I moved onto my sentiment which is how I would bring in the summer theme. I chose a sentiment from a retired Simon Says Stamp set, which reads sending a summer hello. I white heat embossed it in black card, trimmed it down, and fussy cut around the scriptier portion of the sentiment.

I created a black mat for my focal panel to further tie in the black, then adhered the embossed panel onto it with Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue . I used the Tombow glue again to adhere the sentiment onto the panel, then attached the whole thing to a slimline card base. Finally I added some Ebony Black Nuvo Drops to finish off the card.

I really had fun making this card and am very pleased that the embossing technique worked out. This was literally my first try at it! I hope other people will find it useful for using embossing folders on slimline designs.
