CIC 525 | Book Bear | Aqua, Red, Brown

We’re playing with colours for the latest Cupcake Inspiration Challenge. From now until next week’s Friday we’d love to see your projects focusing on the colours aqua, red and brown. You can bring in other colours too, but the focus should be the challenge colours.

For my card I started by pulling a couple of patterned papers from Lawn Fawn’s Into The Woods Remix 6×6 Patterned Paper Pad. I chose the brown wood grain pattern, and a polka dot aqua. I cut the wood grain panel to be a little smaller than my red card base, then cut a strip of the aqua pattern to be a diagonal line across. It wasn’t quite long enough, but I knew I could cut it later and hide the divide behind my focal panel.

The focal panel itself I cut from a piece of alcohol marker friendly white card with a Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Oval die. I placed the panel into my MISTI and started my stamping using images from Lawn Fawn’s Den Sweet Den. I wanted to do some no-line colouring, so I used Simon Says Stamp’s Barely Beige ink. I first stamped the bear, stamping a mask for him at the same time. I added the book to his hands with the help of some washi tape to mask the hands off, then placed the full mask over the bear and stamped the piles of books around and behind him. It makes the books look rather big, perspective wise, but I wanted him surrounded by books, so I went with it. As needed I used bits of washi tape to mask the frame of the oval to keep my stamping contained within the stitched area.

I used my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers as usual for doing the colouring. I started by colouring the bear, keeping my shadows to the left hand side and highlights to the right. I used Earth Browns for the main body of the bear, then switched to Golden Browns for the muzzle.

For the books I of course wanted to pull in the other colours of my colour palette. I alternated each book in red and aqua, and the books that have extra decoration on them I did in either the opposite colour or in the brown. I also used my lightest Golden Brown to add flicks of colour to give the looks of pages in the books.

The floor also uses the Golden Browns, I laid in the whole area first with the lightest colour, then worked through to the darkest using flicks and lines to add a wood grain look to the floor. For the wall I kept it very simple with flat grey, helping it fade to the background.

Bear – EB7, EB4, EB1

Muzzle – GB7, GB4, GB2

Books, red – TN9, TN7, CR11, MG3

Books, aqua – BT9, BT7, BT5, BT1

Pages – GB2

Floor – GB9, GB7, GB4, GB2

Wall – IG2

The sentiment I used is from the same Den Sweet Den stamp set. It’s all on one line, but I masked and partially stamped a bit at a time so that I could stack it instead. I used Altenew’s Ruby Red ink for this.

With all the elements ready I could start assembling. I laid the aqua strip diagonally on my woodgrain panel, placed the oval panel on top and used that as a guide to work out where to cut the panel. I then adhered the aqua paper into place, being sure to keep the line consistent despite it being two pieces rather than a single strip. I added a snippet of white card in the gap to help support my focal element, then adhered the oval into place too, and attached the whole thing onto my red card base.

As a final touch I edged my aqua strip with some Love From Lizi Pinstripe Peel-Offs in Brown Mirror.

I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge. You can find further inspiration from the rest of the Design Team on the challenge site or directly at their blogs via the links below.

  1. A perfect combination of challenges, Charlotte ! Love this adorable image and your no-line colouring is just amazing. Beautiful design too. You should add it to the Day of the Month Card Club challenge as well. Thanks so much for sharing and for playing along at ATSM.
